Discipline quotes for the part of the day nobody sees
Discipline has a bad reputation, and some of it is earned. The word has been handed to us by people selling five-in-the-morning routines, and it now sounds like punishment with a schedule attached. The older writers meant something quieter: self-command. Not force applied to yourself, but the ability to stay the same person at four in the afternoon that you were at nine in the morning.
That distinction matters because it changes what you measure. A whip-based discipline is measured in hours logged and mornings survived, and it collapses the first week you are ill or sad. Self-command is measured in returns — how quickly you come back after the day goes sideways, how little drama the coming back requires. Almost every line below is about the return rather than the streak, which is why they were written by people in exile, on campaign, or otherwise not having a good week.
We keep this list short on purpose. Every quotation here is traceable to a specific work at a specific place in it, and the ones we could not place were cut, however well they would have performed. Read one properly instead of all seven quickly.

Discipline is mostly remembering, at the wrong moment, what you decided at the right one. Set one of these on a dawn sky in the Quote Studio and put it where the wrong moment happens — a Lock Screen, a desk, a door.
