Focus quotes for a mind that keeps wandering off
Distraction is usually described as a modern problem, which is flattering to us and untrue. Seneca was writing to a friend about the restlessness of a man who reads a little of everything and finishes nothing. Marcus Aurelius kept reminding himself, in a private notebook, to come back to the thing in front of him. The pull away from the present is old. What has changed is how much is now built to catch it.
The useful thing in these older lines is that none of them treat attention as a performance metric. They treat it as a way of being somewhere — a decision about where you actually are for the next hour. That framing is gentler than the productivity version and, in practice, more durable. You are not trying to squeeze more output from a distracted mind. You are trying to be in one place long enough for it to settle.
Every quotation below is traceable to a specific book, letter, or chapter. There are only a handful, because a handful is what survives checking, and because a page about focus should not ask you to scroll.
