Mindfulness quotes for people who are tired of being told to breathe

Mindfulness is the most quoted idea on the internet and the least sourced. Search it and you get a wall of soft lines attributed to the Buddha, to Rumi, to Thoreau — most of which appear in none of their works. The irony is hard to miss: a practice about paying attention, promoted with words nobody bothered to check.

So this collection is small. Every line below sits in a named book at a named place, and the ones we could not place were dropped, however well they read on a photograph of a lake. What survives turns out to be less serene than the genre suggests. Marcus Aurelius wrote about retreating into himself while running a war. Montaigne was describing an ordinary habit, not a technique. These are working notes from busy lives, not invitations to withdraw from one.

That is the useful part. Presence is not a mood you get into once the day calms down; it is what you do with the day you already have. One sentence, read slowly, does more for that than a feed of forty.
