Perseverance quotes for the long middle of something hard

Perseverance is badly served by the way we usually talk about it. The stories that get told are about the start, when the decision feels brave, and the finish, when it looks inevitable. Almost nothing gets written about the long middle — the part where the work is no longer new, no one is watching, and stopping would cost you nothing visible.

That is where these lines are aimed. They come from people who wrote while still inside the difficulty: an emperor keeping notes on campaign, a philosopher writing letters he knew might outlive him, a man who had been enslaved and spent the rest of his life saying plainly what freedom costs. None of them promise that continuing is easy or that it will be rewarded. They say something more useful — that the obstacle is not an interruption of the work, it is the shape the work takes.
