Forgiveness quotes for a grudge you are tired of carrying

Forgiveness has a bad reputation because of how it is usually sold: as a favour to the person who hurt you, or as a decision to call the injury smaller than it was. Almost none of the older writing on the subject works that way. The oldest lines are practical and slightly cold-eyed — they are about what a grudge costs the person holding it, and about the fact that resentment is a full-time occupation nobody pays you for.

We kept this list short on purpose. Forgiveness is one of the most heavily counterfeited quote categories on the internet, and a great many of the warmest-sounding lines cannot be found in any book by the person credited. Every quotation here is traceable to a public-domain work at the locator given. Where a source disagrees with the modern consensus — Confucius, asked whether injury should be repaid with kindness, said no, repay it with justice — we left the disagreement in. It is more honest, and it is better company than agreement.

None of this requires you to resume the friendship, or to say it was fine. It asks something narrower: stop spending today on it.
