Courage quotes for the moment just before you act
Courage is badly served by the way it gets quoted. The posters make it loud — a shout, a leap, a jaw set against the wind. The primary sources are quieter than that, and more accurate. What they describe is usually a small decision made before anyone is watching: saying the true thing, doing the right thing once you have seen it, going ahead while still afraid.
That gap matters, because loud courage is easy to admire and impossible to practise. Seneca’s observation that difficulty follows from not daring, rather than the other way round, is not a slogan; it is a description of how avoidance compounds. Confucius put the same point as an accusation: knowing what is right and not doing it is where the failure actually lives. Neither man is asking for heroics. They are asking for the next honest move.
Every line below has been checked against the book it is supposed to come from, at the section given. Some famous courage quotes did not survive that check and are not here. Read one of the ones that did, and let it do its work before you go on.
