Hope quotes for the mornings when you have to choose it

Hope has a bad reputation among serious people. It sounds like wishing, and wishing sounds like doing nothing. But the writers who lasted did not use the word that way. For them hope was closer to attention: a decision to keep looking at a situation instead of turning away from it, made on a day when turning away would have been easier.

That is why the honest lines about hope are so plain. They do not promise an outcome. Dickinson gives hope feathers and a small voice, not a guarantee. Thoreau ends a long book about failure and solitude with a sentence about morning. What they share is a refusal to conclude early — the sense that a day is not finished being interpreted just because it has gone badly so far.

Every quotation here is checked against the book it comes from, which is why the list is short. The famous hope lines that circulate without a source are usually the ones that promise the most.
