Acceptance quotes for the parts of life you did not choose

Acceptance has a reputation problem. It gets read as giving up, or as a kind of pleasant numbness you are supposed to feel about things that are genuinely bad. The older writers meant something narrower and more useful: stop spending energy on the part of the situation that is already settled, so you have some left for the part that is not.

That distinction is doing most of the work. A diagnosis, a decision someone else made, weather, the fact that it is Tuesday and you are tired — these are facts, and arguing with facts is expensive. What you do next is not a fact yet. Nearly every line below is drawn along that seam, and several were written by people whose circumstances were much worse than the ones we usually apply them to.

Acceptance is also not a mood you can summon. It is closer to a habit of noticing where your resistance is aimed. One sentence, kept where you will see it, does more of that noticing than an afternoon of reading about it.
