Motivational quotes that survive contact with a real day

Most motivational quote collections are long because length is cheap. Ours is short because every line has to survive a check against the book it supposedly came from — and a surprising number of famous lines do not. The internet attributes freely; primary sources are stricter.

What is left after that check is more useful than what gets discarded. These are not slogans about winning. They are sentences written by people in the middle of difficult lives — an exiled philosopher, a man who went to the woods on purpose, a poet writing through an ordinary year — about how to keep going without pretending it is easy.

Read one. Not the list. The point of a good sentence is that it stays with you after you close the page, and that only happens when you give it room.
