Self-love quotes for people who find the phrase a little embarrassing
Self-love is a modern phrase for an old idea, and the modern version has drifted. It now often means treating yourself well after a hard week. The older version, the one that shows up in the books below, is closer to self-respect: keeping your own good opinion of yourself intact, because you have to live inside it.
That reframing helps, because respect is something you can act on. It sets a floor under what you will agree to, how you speak about yourself when no one is listening, and what you let a bad afternoon conclude about your whole life. Nobody talks themselves into liking themselves by repeating that they do. They get there sideways, by not betraying themselves in small ways for a while.
These lines were written by people who had reasons to doubt their own worth and decided not to. Read one properly rather than all seven quickly — a sentence only does its work if you give it enough room to argue with you.
