Quote of the Day

“Only that day dawns to which we are awake.”

Henry David ThoreauWalden, 1854

Every line above is verified against a primary source — the citation is the source. A new quote arrives each day.

How today's line is chosen

Selection is arithmetic, not profiling. The page counts the days elapsed since the Unix epoch and divides by the number of quotes in the library; the remainder is today's index. Every reader opening this page on the same day sees the same line, and nothing about you is read, stored, or sent anywhere to produce it.

Attribution is settled before a line can enter the library at all. Each quotation is traced to a primary source — the original work in a reliable edition, a scholarly edition, a manuscript archive, or a faithful public-domain text — and carries the most precise locator we can give it: book and passage, letter number, chapter, or poem. Aggregator sites and social posts may suggest a lead; they never count as evidence. A popular line with no traceable origin is left out rather than printed.
