Friendship is the subject where quote collections go furthest wrong. The sentiment is easy to fake, so the internet is full of warm lines attached to whichever famous name will carry them. Every quotation below has been checked against the book it comes from, and the ones that failed the check were dropped rather than softened.

What survives is less sentimental than expected. The old writers on friendship were unusually practical about it. They wrote about how slowly you should decide to trust someone, how a good thing is smaller when there is nobody to tell, how the only reliable way to be owed friendship is to give it first. Cicero defined it almost like a contract. Montaigne, having lost the one friend who mattered, could only manage a shrug of a sentence — and it is the truest line in this collection.
